Promoting Sustainable Infrastructure with Chinese Partners Globally

Posted: Dec 05, 2019

In the afternoon of December 4th 2019, the Sino-German Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) co-organized with the China International Contractors Association (CHINCA) a forum on sustainable infrastructure in Changsha, Hunan Province. Mr. Hagen Ettner, German Director of the (CSD), delivered a keynote speech, reviewing the history of cooperation between GIZ and CHINCA over the last ten years, starting from sustainability performance of Chinese contractors, focusing on sustainable infrastructure development from 2016 and the current cooperation areas: joint trainings for CHINCA members on sustainability topics, combination of Corporate Social Responsibility and Development Cooperation, Sino-German business cooperation for development goals, and promoting the use of the Guidelines of Sustainable Infrastructure for Chinese International Contractors (SIG) through benchmarking, case collection and dissemination – the latter area being in the center of the event. He underlined the commitment to further work together with CHINCA on promoting and implementing sustainable infrastructure globally.

Asides from another keynote speech by Ms. WANG He, Vice Chair of CHINCA, a penal discussion brought together representatives from the Macro Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Hunan Road and Bridge Construction Group Co., Ltd., China Technology Import and Export Group Co., Ltd. (CNTIC), Credit Evaluation Center of China Export Credit Insurance Corporation, and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC).

Winners of the 2019 China International Sustainable Infrastructure Award were announced during the event. Six winning projects shared their cases with the audience and provided in-depth insights how their cases perform against the sustainable infrastructure guidelines (SIG).

Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GIZ had supported CHINCA in developing those guidelines which were launched in 2017. The Award plays a central role in raising awareness of sustainability standards / best practices amongst CHINCA companies, promoting peer-learning among enterprises, involving more Chinese contractors and incentivizing SIG implementation through publicity. The process of compiling good practices and awarding very good examples supports benchmarking and translation of rather high-level SIG prescriptions into action.

Until now, CHINCA has evaluated applying projects twice, in 2017 with 18 projects being awarded, and in 2019 with 19 projects.
