Co-hosted by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of the Federal Republic of Germany (BMZ), and the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China (MofCom), the Sino-German Forum on Sustainable Development 2024 will be held at GIZ Representative Office in Berlin, 9 – 12 am, November 26th 2024,
Theming “Promoting Sustainable Supply Chains for Development”, the Forum this year will bring together key stakeholders from Germany, China, and international communities, including policymakers, researchers, and practitioners, to have discussions and exchanges on:
• Sustainable value chain for agricultural products
• Sustainable forestry management and timber value chain
Agricultural production, processing and trade in agricultural products are the main source of income and livelihood for many people around the world. The trade in agricultural products is booming. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the monetary value of global agricultural exports in 2020 was nominally 3.7 times higher than in 2000. Small manufacturing and processing companies can also benefit from this.
Forests are critical for climate protection and development: they secure food, raw materials, income and economic development. About 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their livelihoods, and for the 350 million extremely poor worldwide, the forest forms a vital safety net. At the same time, forests are essential for the local and global climate and are home to more than two-thirds of terrestrial biodiversity.
The objective of the Sino-German Forum on Sustainable Development 2024 is to explore cooperative solutions to support the development of sustainable global supply chains in agriculture and forestry, focusing on the needs of developing countries. The discussions will address critical challenges locally, while identifying pathways to promote sustainable trade globally, in order to enhance food security, and drive economic growth through socially and environmentally responsible practices.
The Sino-German Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) is responsible for the organization of the Forum. Established in 2017, the Center is a joint initiative by the BMZ and the MofCom to explore new, innovative ways of international cooperation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
