2017年5月11日，中德可持续发展中心由德国联邦经济合作与发展部 (BMZ) 和中华人民共和国商务部 (MOFCOM) 共同发起成立。

中德可持续发展中心的工作围绕三大支柱：

商务部外贸发展局 (TDB) 与德国国际合作机构 (GIZ) 被任命为中心的联合实施机构，向中国商务部与德国经合部汇报。中国商务部和德国经合部作为政府部门，承担中心的指导工作。
