GIZ Showcases Climate Finance Innovations and Triangular Cooperation at Green Investment for Global Energy Transition Forum

Posted: 6月 24, 2024

On June 21 2024, GIZ, the China International Contractors Association (CHINCA), and World Wildlife Fund co-hosted the Forum “Green Investment for Global Energy Transition”, during the 15th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum (IIICF) in Macao. The Forum also served as the annual meeting of MISIP, the Mechanism for International Sustainable Infrastructure Promotion. More than 100 representatives from government, financial institutions, enterprises, international organizations, professional institutions, and academia participated in this event.

Thorsten Giehler, Regional Director of GIZ East Asia, highlighted the fruitful 15-year partnership between GIZ and CHINCA and introduced Germany’s contributions to climate finance in his keynote speech. Triangular cooperation is an innovative collaboration modality for pooling resources, sharing expertise, and driving financial innovation to advance climate finance, according to Mr. Giehler. Through triangular cooperation, more stakeholders and resources can be leveraged in the MISIP mechanism, to achieve a just energy transition and to support the sustainable development goals.

MISIP announced two milestone results during the forum. Shang Shengping, Director-General of the Department of Strategy and Consulting at CHINCA, representing the MISIP Secretariat, released the research paper on Carbon Management of Chinese International Contractors, a practical guide for enterprise carbon management covering compliance requirements, accounting methods, and carbon asset development process. Jochen Weikert, Co-Director of the China in the World Cluster in GIZ, launched the first triangular cooperation project under the MISIP mechanism. Being the first of its kind in Africa, the project brings together efforts and expertise from China National Electric Engineering Co., Ltd., Ethiopia Electric Power, and GIZ, to improve the sustainable operations of the Reppie Waste-to-Energy plant in Ethiopia through technology transfer and capacity development.

Three panel discussions were facilitated in the forum. The panel Financing for Energy Transition explored strategies to innovate financing models, mobilize private capital, and promote the development of sustainable financial products, transition financing, and blended financing.

The panel Trends and Best Practices examined the opportunities and challenges faced by Chinese enterprises in overseas renewable energy investments, including technology, financing, and risk management. Optimal pathways for enhancing financing capabilities were identified by the speakers.

The panel The Role of Carbon Pricing and Transition Scenario Risks in Promoting Global Energy Transformation discussed carbon pricing and innovation in carbon reduction technologies, and how to incorporate carbon pricing into investment and financing models.

The forum highlighted GIZ’s dedication to promoting climate finance through partnerships and knowledge sharing. With the launch of a new initiative under MISIP and in-depth discussions on key issues, stakeholders are now better equipped to support sustainable infrastructure solutions globally. GIZ anticipates ongoing collaboration with partners, particularly through triangular cooperation, to achieve equitable energy transitions and sustainable development worldwide.
