Sustainable Development Seminar Conducted as part of UIBE’s Summer School

Posted: 7月 27, 2019

University of International Business and Economics, 22nd to 26th July, Beijing

Sustainable Development – From Global Goals to Local Implementation, a week-long intensive seminar organized by the Sino-German Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) on development topics with real project cases, has been concluded in the brand new Qiusuo Building in the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) on 26th July. Forty-five students from UIBE successfully completed the Summer School course and received their certificates awarded by Dr. Ulrich Müller and Mrs. Carolina de la Lastra, the lead lecturers, as well as Mr. Hagen Ettner, German Director of the CSD.

The seminar aims at an intercultural learning experience on means and methods for innovative and participatory implementation of development cooperation. Building on the management model Capacity Works, the seminar was specially designed to not only transfer knowledge of development cooperation project planning and implementation but also to develop the abilities and competencies of the students, such as: teamwork, presentation and language skills, critical and innovative thinking.

Despite the intensive five days sessions with various challenges such as individual and group presentations, students had enjoyed the week with both the lead lecturers and various projects presenters from GIZ.

“It was a very important experience for me. Development came to be visual and meaningful. Our force is small, but if we come together, we change the world.”

“I have learned a lot about communication. The methods in the class can be applied in many subjects. The presentations really motivated our minds. We really expressed our own ideas.”

Besides the students from UIBE, afternoon sessions of this seminar were also open to representatives from various institutes including government agencies, NGOs, universities and enterprises. Participants gained insights on lessons learnt from Latin American and German practice in development cooperation. Apart from theoretical and conceptual inputs, they received in depth insights on project cases that also involve China. The topics presented in the afternoon sessions covered wide range and interest from quality infrastructure, trilateral cooperation to textile and elderly care.

“A trilateral project requires interest in the developmental objectives but has to make sense for the bilateral relations of all partners as well. The benefit for the beneficiary country and the combination of comparative advantages must be in the focus and the starting point.”

 — Hagen Ettner
German Director of the Sino-German Center for Sustainable Development.

“The project “Fostering and Advancing Sustainable Business and Responsible Industrial Practices in the Clothing Industry in Asia” (FABRIC) is addressing sustainability in the textile and garment industry in its social, economic and environmental dimensions in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Vietnam and cooperates with actors in China, supporting the efforts of business representatives, government institutions, civil society and trade unions to build an industry that offers quality jobs, protects the environment and contributes to economic growth.”

“Quality infrastructure (QI) is a system comprised of regulatory and institutional elements in the areas of metrology, standardisation, conformity assessment, accreditation and market surveillance to ensure quality and safety of products and services in the national market. A well-functioning QI is crucial for economic development in the domestic context. At the same time, an internationally harmonised QI is necessary to facilitate trade with other countries. Exposing future development and business professionals to technical concepts such as QI will enable them to make meaningful contributions to sustainable development locally and globally.”

“The aging society is a huge challenge for both China and Germany. The health ministries of both countries have agreed to collaborate in this field. One focal point is the training of nurses with focus on elderly care. GIZ together with a private partner has developed competence-oriented curricula based on the German dual vocational education system and is currently implementing them in Chinese colleges. The combination of theoretical and practical training guarantees the employability.”

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH

On behalf of UIBE, Professor Li Xiaomeng, Director of International Cooperation Division, received Dr. Ulrich Müller, Mrs. Carolina de la Lastra, the lead lecturers, and Mr. Hagen Ettner, German Director of CSD. “This is the first training seminar we co-organized with CSD” said Prof Li, “which has been a successful start for more trainings to come in the future”. The Sino-German Center for Sustainable Development stands ready to further facilitate exchange with and capacity building of Chinese current and future practitioners of sustainable development.
